Questions
What is gas?
Gas measures the work a transaction asks the network to do. You pay gas used × gas price, in the chain’s own coin: a plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas; a token swap uses around 150,000. The gas price, quoted in gwei (a billionth of a coin), rises and falls with demand for block space.
What do slow, standard and fast mean?
On chains with EIP-1559 fees, every block has a base fee that everyone pays, and a tip that goes to the block producer. Standard is the next block’s base fee plus the median tip paid in recent blocks; slow uses a smaller tip; fast adds room for the base fee to rise 12.5% in the next block, its maximum increase.
Why are rollups like Base and Arbitrum so much cheaper?
Rollups bundle thousands of transactions and post them to Ethereum together, so each one pays only a small share of Ethereum’s cost. Most of a rollup fee is that data share. These figures include it, as each chain estimates it for a typical transaction of each kind: OP Mainnet and Base through their GasPriceOracle, Arbitrum One through its NodeInterface. When that estimate is not available the table shows the older upper bound or approximation, and says so.
When is gas cheapest?
On Ethereum, fees are usually lowest at weekends and during the early hours UTC, when the US and Europe are asleep, and highest during popular mints and sharp market moves. Each chain’s page shows the cheapest hour over the last 24 hours.
Where do these numbers come from?
Straight from each chain: Wardcrest reads the recent fee history from its own RPC connections every minute. Dollar values use current CoinGecko prices for ETH, POL and BNB.
